Good question. Six points of the star are representative of the six states of Australia while the seventh is representative of the territories and any future states... so says Wikipedia anyway. So, one could say that it's anywhere from 0 km to about 20,000 km, if Australia holds a territory on the opposite side of the planet... kind of.
The Southern Cross is the five stars on the right side of the flag, for anyone who didn't pick up on that...
